You may have seen a flurry of webbook related articles appear over the last couple of days. As with pretty much all news stories some of it is true, some of it not so true, and it certainly doesn’t tell the full story. I will try and find out what I am allowed to say to enhance the truthiness of the situation.
Drivers for most hardware are already in the kernel. The Huawei dongles are all supported by the kernel already. The Option Icon 225 wasn’t in the main kernel prior to 2.6.27 (I think I got the number right) but prior to that it could be used with an external module, the hso module in this instance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loadable_kernel_module in Intrepid and beyond the Icon 225 doesn’t need any drivers as it is supported in the kernel.
If it helps, I think T-mobile use the E220 dongle.
I know that works well on 8.10, without the need for wader.
Just run the setup wizard by clicking the network icon once the dongle is in, and hey presto!
And hotspots are easier – just choose T-Mobile from the list, and pop in the username and password you got from T-Mobile…
