Comments on: So how do you want your Intrepid webbook?

Hi All

New Year, new broom, so to speak. I’ve been using OO 3 on Fedora since last year, and decided it really is about time I added it to my Ubuntu installs.

Here is what to do in Intrepid, no searching and no command line access required.

First off we need to add the Launchpad repository for OpenOffice to our software sources, as it’s still not mainline ubuntu as yet.

To do this:

From the task bar, Click on ‘System’
Go down to ‘Administration’
Go Down to ‘Software Sources’
Now enter your password, as prompted.

Once the Software sources application has started:
Select the ‘Third Party software’ tab
Click on the ‘Add’ button on the bottom left hand corner
In the text box for APT line enter the following : deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main
Click ‘Add Source’
Click ‘Close’
After a little while the ‘Software Sources’ application will close.
Now all that is left is to simply ‘Update’ your system as usual.

You now have a fully functioning OpenOffice.org 3 installation.

Couldn’t be simpler really. (Much less hassle than a Windows application install)

I’d like to add that the upgrade to 8.10 from inside Update Manager leaves everything intact, and working…
No clicking required, unless you’ve tinkered with some system configuration settings (turns away and whistles to himself)!

1) perhaps. I am trying to organise something like this.
2) yep, it wipes everything totally
3) post-install you go through the first user wizard, thats it.

Slightly off topic but;
I am considering upgrading to Intrepid but I have a few questions.
1) Could the upgrade be made available on some sort of hardware at a nominal cost (e.g. SD card as we all have the sd slot on thr front of the webbook)
2) Does the upgrade wipe existing third party applications; use a couple of maths/development type ones (Octave,Gambas) which wouldn’t be worth including on a specific release but I wouldn’t want to loose my existing setups (and data) and have to start from scratch again.
3) Although I’ve used Linux for a while I am still a newbie to the underlying operation of Linux and the command line still daunts; I remember times when a spelling mistake could wreak (unintentional) havok. How much post-install ‘fiddling’ is needed.
4) Never used virtualbox other than as a look-see……..likewise wine….if I want windows applications I have other machines.

1) It has been talked about but I have not seen any hardware or timescales
2) It will take a SATA SSD, but a 64GB one I tried didn’t work. Your mileage may vary.
3) Yes 512 is fine.
4) Not at the moment. Maybe one day as the OpenChrome drivers improve.

Thought I’d ask here as none of the other posts are appropriate. Thinking of getting a webbook for my MD at work to use for trips – he currently has a (heavy) Dell laptop plus Orange SPV smartphone . Some questions which I’m kind of stumped on….

1. Mobile broadband – is this planned to be integrated any time soon i.e. no dongle, just a sim card
2. Could I install an SD Drive instead of a the HDD – I thinking of the weight and power saving and quicker boot times?
3. Is 512kb enough for “business oriented” use where there are multiple apps open, in your opinion.
4. If I gave him an external monitor and usb keyboard/mouse, could he use it to hook up to our web based ERP system (needs 1280×1024 to be really useful)

I think the mysql stuff is great but folk who want it are going to be able to install it themselves. I will have to try grsync, I use Unison but I have been looking for something better for a while. digiKam is KDE so that will go on the Kubuntu Intrepid build. I would like ssh server but this is probably going to need an upstream change in the oem-config script to regenerate the keys.

Hi All

Additonal Software that would be good installed by default:

1. mysql server, client, jdbc and mysql administrator
2. gftp (Excellent file transfer client, not restricted to just ftp)
3. grsync (Excellent gui frontend to rsync, yes I used to use unison, but since finding grsync, I’m afraid grsync takes pole position. Perfect for making, and maintaining backups to other PC’s, and/or removeable hard drives)
4. digiKam (No real reason other than I use and like it)
5. ssh server, with as part of the first use script assigned to generating new server keys.

Also yes I think Thunderbird should be the default mail client.

I’m sure I’ll think of others as I go along

Wee rascal’s actually just managed to fix it! not bad for trial and error from a 13 year old. It’s actually restored to before the update, so now we can follow the instructions from those who’ve managed it successfully. He’s off to play with the Hydrogen drum machine he’d downloaded before the update.
